Walter was born in Three Rivers, Texas on September 3, 1924 to Frank and Alice Schattel, and died at his home on Saturday, November 3, 2018. He was the younger of two boys. Walter graduated from high school in Wichita Falls, Texas in 1941. He entered the service on April 6, 1943, and served as a radio operator-gunner on a B-17. He was assigned to the 8th Air Force and flew 37 missions over Germany. In November of 2016, he received the French Legion Honor Medal, the highest honor given to veterans who had risked their lives fighting on French soil during World War II.\r\n\r\nWalter married Irene Morrissette on December 4, 1971 in Deer Park, Texas. They had no children. Walter was a Locomotive Engineer, and worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 38 years. He was an avid wood carver.\r\n\r\nHe and Irene enjoyed traveling, and had visited all the lower 48 states. They moved to Kerrville in May, 2003, and were members of Notre Dame Catholic Church.\r\n\r\nMemorial Mass will be held at 1:30 PM, Friday, November 9, 2018 at Notre Dame Catholic Church.\r\n\r\n\r\n
