Mrs. Virgie Viola "Gamaw" (Crist) McHaney was born December 4, 1934 in Frankston, Texas to Lawrence and Gertrude (Adkins) Crist. She graduated from Cayuga High School in 1952, and went on to receive her Bachelor's and Master's degree in education from North Texas State University. Virgie has called the Texas Hill Country home since her marriage to the great love of her life, Jack ‘Corky' "PopPop" McHaney in 1973.\r\n\r\nShe lost her battle with pancreatic cancer with strength, grace and courage on November 15, 2019 surrounded by her husband, children and grandchildren in her home of 46 years in Medina, TX.\r\n\r\nVirgie was a brilliant woman who had a fulfilling career as a college professor, and sat as the Department Head of Business Technology at San Antonio College before retiring. She was a member of the Eastern Star, accomplished at needlepoint, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She was an active member of the Medina United Methodist Church, a community volunteer, she enjoyed square dancing, traveling, and many club memberships with Corky. Together they were active in the Goldwing Motorcycle Club, The GMC Classics chapter of the Family Motor Coach Association, where she was a Charter Member and the National Director. You would often find Virgie and Corky supporting their grandchildren at the various Athletic and Academic events held at Medina Schools. Virgie will be remembered for her strength, community involvement, fun-loving personality, faith, devotion to her friends and family, and her unconditional love and commitment to her husband and their colorful life together.\r\n\r\nVirgie "Gamaw" is survived by children Casey Beakley, Jack and Diane McHaney, Randy McClammy; grandchildren Brooke and Bo, Brittin and Brad, Tyler and Kelsey, Rachel and Jack, Caleb, and Averie; great-grandchildren, Mica, Mac, Tatum, Maci, Reid, Mackoy, and Savannah; along with countless cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones.\r\n\r\nShe is preceded in death by her parents Lawrence and Gertrude Crist, sister Jeffie Marie Dickey, and nephew Mack Dickey.\r\n\r\nHer family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. James Young and staff, her hospice nurse Debbie, Peterson Hospice Group and Grimes Family Funeral Home for their loving care of our dear Gamaw.\r\n\r\nThere will be a memorial in celebration of her life and an Eastern Star service at 1:00pm at The Medina United Methodist Church on December 14, 2019, reception to follow.
