Vernon Edward Shields, 81, of Kerrville, Texas passed from this life on December 11, 2015, at a local hospital in Kerrville, Texas.\r\n \r\nVernon was born October 8, 1934 to Zula Mae Williams and Willie Shields in Brackettville, Texas. He was the eldest of two children born.\r\n \r\nHe was baptized at the Church of St. Mary Magdalen by Reverend Tonson Jr. on March 6, 1935. \r\n \r\nHe spent his early childhood years living in San Angelo. He later moved to Kerrville and attended Doyle High School. While attending Doyle, Vernon enjoyed playing many sports where he excelled in football and basketball, and was later inducted into the Doyle Exes Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010. After graduating from Doyle High School in 1954, he joined the United States Air Force.\r\n \r\nHe was united in holy matrimony to Evelyn Mills on December 24, 1954. To this union, four children were born: Danny, twins Tanya and Sanya, and Nell. He was employed by the Kerrville Telephone Company and retired after 45 years. He was well known for his technical telephone skills and respected by his co-workers. He was a member of the Doyle Exes Association. \r\n \r\nHe was preceded in death by his parents.\r\n \r\nHe is survived by his loving, devoted wife of 60 years, Evelyn; son, Danny of Kerrville; daughters, Tanya (Walter) Holloway of Austin, Sanya Sarrell of Kerrville, and Nell Shields of Kerrville; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; sister, Sylvia (Joe) Lewis of Kerrville; one special niece, Joletta Lewis of Dallas; uncle, Robert Kibbett of San Antonio; sister in law, Nell Nash of San Antonio; and a host of other relatives and friends.\r\n \r\nViewing of the body will be Friday, December 18, 2015 from 6-8pm at Grimes Funeral Chapels.\r\n \r\nFuneral services will be held Saturday, December 19, 2015, 11 AM at Grimes Funeral Chapels officiated by Rev. Noah Diggs. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories North Cemetery.\r\n \r\nIn lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the charity of one's choice.\r\n
