Vernon G. Culwell, 85, of Bandera, Texas, passed from this life on November 3, 2019 at home. Vernon was born July 7, 1934 in Wink, Texas to parents, Luke and Iva Culwell. \r\n\r\nVernon attended Northside High School in San Antonio, Texas where his class started the football program. They played and practiced on an unprepared field, rocks and all. \r\n\r\nAfter graduating high school, he joined the military and served in the Army. At the end of his service, he met and married the love of his life, Nettie Jean Dale, and moved to Kerrville, Texas. \r\n\r\nIn 1960, he went to work for Mooney Aircraft. Ten years later, he moved his family to Junction, Texas where he became the owner/operator of Segovia Truck Stop. In 1978, he moved back to the Kerrville area where he and Jeanie opened and operated the Oak Trails Shopette on Highway 16 South. After retiring in 1995, he and Jeanie traveled in their RV cross country until settling in Bandera, Texas.\r\n\r\nHe was preceded in death by his mother, Iva Culwell Windom; father, Luke Culwell; two brothers, John Culwell and Willie Jack Culwell; a sister, Quay Lawson; and a daughter, Debra Moore. \r\n\r\nHe is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nettie Jean Culwell of Bandera, Texas; a brother, Billy Copland of San Antonio, Texas; a daughter, Peggy Heathman Chittum and her husband Charles R. Chittum of San Angelo, Texas; two sons, Donny Culwell of Bandera, Texas, Randal Culwell of Stephenville, Texas and his wife Mae Culwell; eight grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.\r\n\r\nIn lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the charity of choice. \r\n\r\nNo services scheduled at this time.
