Rodney Jason Camp\r\nRodney Jason Camp, born September 16, 1922 in San Antonio, passed away on December 7, 2018, at his home on Slinsky Rd. in Medina surrounded by family and loved ones. He was raised on a farm just north of Helotes by his parents, John F. Camp, Sr., and Martha Lenora Laughter as well as his beloved grandmother, Nanny. Vacations were spent at Blue Cedar Ranch at the headwaters of the North Prong of the Medina River, his favorite place on this earth. His father purchased it when he was only 6, so it was an important part of his entire life. This upbringing instilled in him a lifelong love of nature, the country, the outdoors and all God's creatures.\r\nBy Rodney's high school years, the family had moved into San Antonio where he graduated from Jefferson High School in 1939. He continued on to the University of Texas in Austin where he obtained his degree in Geology in 1943. While there, he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha social fraternity and Sigma Gamma Epsilon scholastic fraternity.Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Army and served as a Staff Sargent until shortly before his marriage on April 19, 1946. \r\nThe longest and best chapter of Rodney's life story came about because his cousin was a boarding student at St. Mary's Hall. She had a classmate, Martha "Pete" Otto, who was one of the friends invited to a senior year House Party at Blue Cedar Ranch. Rodney's mother assigned him the duty of showing the girls around-and he took a "shine" to one who also enjoyed the outdoor things he did! It wasn't long before he was riding his Harley out to her family's ranch on Hwy 46 to go "courting"……which led to a marriage that lasted until her death in 2009. \r\nRodney worked as a geologist for Camp Oil Company and lived in San Antonio, Casper, WY and, primarily, Midland, TX until his retirement. At that point "Pete" and Rodney returned to their beloved Hill Country, living near Medina. Those years were spent breeding, raising and showing miniature horses with their Horses, Limited business. \r\nRodney was always involved in the local community. He was Chairman of the Building Committee of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church when the new Parish Hall was built. Both were early supporters of the Medina Community Library as well as other organizations including Peterson Regional Medical Center and the Southwest Seminary.\r\nPreceded in death by his parents, John F. Camp, Sr., and Martha L. Camp, his brothers John Jr., Tom and Bill as well as his beloved wife, "Pete", Rodney is survived by his daughter Kathleen Casper Lackey and husband David of Medina as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their children. \r\nThe family especially wishes to thank longtime nurse, Art Moreno and wife, Terry, who gave him unbelievable care and love for almost 7 years. We also wish to thank the wonderful caregivers of United Angels as well as Peterson Hospice and its terrific staff. His internist, Dr. D. Reed Miloy, took great care of Rodney for many years-proof of that being his 96 years with us! \r\nA memorial service will be held Saturday, December 15th, at 11:00 AM at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Bandera. In lieu of flowers, donations to your favorite charity are preferred.\r\nRodney J. Camp was a true gentleman--a very gentle soul who thought of others before himself. He was an extraordinarily giving, sweet, generous man with a lovely sense of humor who has left many wonderful memories to be cherished forever.
