Robert Zumwalt

July 6, 1930 — August 16, 2018

Robert L Zumwalt, 88, of Kerrville Texas, passed away on Thursday, August 16th, 2018 at his residence. Robert was born in Ingram, Texas on July 6th, 1930. Robert and Audrey were Tivy High School sweethearts and just celebrated their 68th anniversary this past June 25th.\r\n\r\nRobert began his career in law enforcement at the young age of 21, working with Chief Walter Moss. One of his first important responsibilities as a Police Officer, was coaching a Little League baseball team and crossing guard to show young kids they could build good relations with the Police. Robert proudly served 56 years in law enforcement between the Kerrville Police Department, Abilene Police Department, U.S. Customs, Secret Service, one of the first US Sky Marshalls, Special Agent Drug Enforcement, Deputy Bailiff and did prisoner transport work for the Kerr County Sheriff department.\r\n\r\nIn his younger years, Robert was avid in archery, including being field governor for three years, helping build archery ranges in 14 counties and served as President of the Archery Association of Texas for one year. He loved golf, he played weekly for many years till he started having trouble walking the courses. After retiring, he even worked at a golf course for a while. He still watched golf, pretending to be right there with them. If it was not watching golf then it was his Red Sox baseball team or the Dallas Cowboys. But most of all, he had a love for his wife through their adventures in life with their many homes and travels. They lived in Texas, California, Michigan, Florida and came back home to Texas to retire.\r\n\r\nRobert was preceded in death by his father, Isaac Zumwalt; mother, Elver Ann Zumwalt; his brothers, Ben, Bill, and Ruben; and sisters, Eula and Eloise.\r\n\r\nRobert is survived by his wife, Audrey Zumwalt; son, Mike Zumwalt; daughter, Kathie Wilson, her husband Scott Wilson; grandsons, Justin Wilson and Zach Zumwalt. His extended family include grandchildren, Scotty, wife Jennifer, Derrick, wife Daisy, Julie, and Kasey, wife Carrie; and eight great-grandchildren.\r\n\r\nFuneral services were held August 18th, 2018 at Grimes Funeral Chapels with Rev. John Hiddema of First Baptist Church, officiating. Robert lays at rest at Nichols Cemetery.\r\n\r\nPallbearers were his son, Mike; son-in law, Scott Wilson; and his beloved grandsons, Justin and Zach.\r\n\r\nIn lieu of food or flowers, the family wishes donations be given in Robert Zumwalt's name to Peterson Hospice or your choice of charities.\r\nThe family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Young and all the wonderful hospice nurses that have cared for him, prayed with him and become part of his family.\r\n
