Robert John Zimmel, age 85, a resident of Pipe Creek since 1989, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2019 in San Antonio. He was born May 6, 1933 in Douglas County, Minnesota to Anton and Alice Josephine (Quinn) Zimmel. \r\n \r\nRobert served his country honorably in the Army. He was an aircraft mechanic and worked at the San Antonio Airport for 30 years. He served God as a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. \r\n\r\nRobert loved woodworking in his shop, dancing, playing cards and fishing. He enjoyed traveling and being near the water. He especially enjoyed time spent with his family, as he was a quiet, gentle, loving and devoted family man.\r\n\r\nHe was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Lyle Zimmel; and sister, Elaine Engstrom.\r\n\r\nSurvivors include his wife of 61 years, Eleanor (Dunn) Zimmel; daughters, Kathy Judd, Marcia Garvin and husband, Rick and Brenda Thomas and husband, Bill; son, Alan Zimmel and wife, Jane; sister, Carol Dell; grandchildren, Tim Boogaard, Jason Garvin, Matthew Garvin, Brittany Garvin, Andy Zimmel, Jesse Zimmel and Ryan Zimmel; great-grandchildren, Abby Boogaard, Liam Boogaard and Madi Boogaard with two more expected this summer; and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.\r\n\r\nRosary will be held at 6 PM, Thursday, May 2, 2019 at Grimes Funeral Chapels in Bandera.\r\n\r\nMemorial mass will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, May 3, 2019 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Burial with military honors will follow at the New St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery.
