Richard (Dick) Norman Guthrie, 69, of Kerrville, passed away on October 19, 2016 at home after an all too long battle with cancer. Born in Watertown, South Dakota to Warren William Guthrie and Nelda Evaline Guthrie on September 19, 1947. A strong believer in the educated man with a patriotic heart, Richard dedicated his life to academics, military, family and community.\r\n \r\nHe held a bachelor's degree in sociology from Iowa State University, a master's in public administration from Western Kentucky University, as well as an associate degree of applied science in real estate from Tarrant County Junior College. After he received his BS in 1970, he entered the Army as a commissioned officer in the Medical Service Corps. He attended rotary wing flight school at Fort Walter, Texas and Fort Rucker, Alabama, during 1970 and 1971 to earn his commercial helicopter and private fixed wing pilots' licenses. This was followed by tours of duty in Korea from 1971 to 1972 and at Fort Knox, Kentucky from 1972 to 1974. He was released from active duty in January 1975. In 1976 Richard went to work for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Real Estate which he worked for until 2002. He was the Chief of Real Estate for the Galveston, Los Angeles and San Francisco Districts. He was also a realty specialist in the Fort Worth District and spent a year working in the Pentagon in the office of the Assistant Chief of Engineers. Richard was the kind of man that once you got to know him, you loved him from then on. Richard had a deep and loving relationship with his Savior Jesus Christ and you could see God's love though him. He was the best father, husband, son, brother and uncle you could ask for. In addition to his hobbies of stamp collecting, astronomy, handguns and firearms which he perfected while on the varsity pistol team in college he was a man who served his community, country and was active in the First Presbyterian Church of Ingram, TX, serving as a Ruling Elder and as the Clerk of Session.\r\n \r\nRichard is preceded by and will be joining his mother; father; brother, Warren William Guthrie; wife of 43 years, Barbara Ann Guthrie; and daughter, Lara Elise Guthrie-White.\r\n \r\nSurviving Richard are his sisters, Janet Hoffman of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Lynne Shanafelt of Lacey, Washington; son, Matthew W. Guthrie of Kerrville, Texas; and his nephews and nieces who will miss him greatly.\r\n \r\nThere will be a graveside service at 10:00 am on Friday, October 28, 2016 at Garden of Memories, Kerrville, TX. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:30 am on Friday, October 28 at First Presbyterian Church, Ingram, TX with Rev. Raymond M.
