Pauline A. King, 92, of San Antonio, and formally of Augusta, GA passed away on Thursday, April 28. Vera Was Born October 11, 1923 to Tomas and Eleanora (Snaer) Anderwald. She grew up and attended local schools graduating from Bandera High in 1940, and then went on to San Antonio Business College. When World War II broke out she was sworn into the U.S. Marine Corp on her 20th birthday. She was assigned to Cherry Point Air Station and later selected to serve the Fleet Marine Forces Pacific in Honolulu as secretary to the Inspector General.\r\n\r\nOn January 1, 1948 Vera married fellow Marine Henry Lafayette King and together they raised three children. They made their home in Atlanta, GA, where she was a busy homemaker, serving as Brownie, Girl and Boy Scout leader, and local volunteer. In 1969 she went to work for the VA Medical Center as a Medical Administrative Assistant. In 1983 she would lose her husband Laffie after 35 years of marriage. She would continue to work until her retirement at the age of 77.\r\n\r\nIn her retirement she would continue to work as a volunteer at the VA through the Marine Corp League, earning their Community Service Award in 2007. Mom's calendar was always full, singing in the choir at St. Mary's Church, serving coffee and donuts to veterans on the wards at the VA, playing canasta, and as a member of the Montclaire Garden Club where she excelled in arranging. Until recently she enjoyed good health, living independently at Adante Senior Living Center in San Antonio. She will be remembered for the many poems that she wrote, several being published, and for her quick wit and unmistakable laugh. Her faith in God was unyielding, as was the love she had for her family.\r\n\r\nShe is preceded in death by her parents, husband and brothers, James (Margaret Alice) Anderwald of Galveston, Vincent Anderwald of Bandera, Thomas Anderwald who died in WWII, Gerald Anderwald of Buffalo, TX, and baby Anthony Anderwald, and sisters Mary Elinor (Lawrence) Campion of San Antonio, and Dorothy (Calvin) Callahan of Bandera.\r\n\r\nVera is survived by her son Jesse King of Lincolnton, GA; daughters, Virginia Lee King and her husband, Robert Willingham of Washington, GA, Henrianne Westberg and her husband, Wayne of Moscow, ID, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind three sisters, Sister Bernadette Anderwald of Incarnate Word, San Antonio; Louise (Ed) Koehler of San Antonio and Joan Walters of Bandera; and sister-in-law Dolores Anderwald of Buffalo, TX, and baby Anthony Anderwald, and sisters, Mary Elinor (Lawrence) Campion of San Antonio, and Dorothy (Calvin) Callahan of Bandera.\r\n\r\nIn lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to St. Stanislaus Catholic Church or Incarnate Word.\r\n\r\nA Visitation at Grimes Funeral Chapel will be Monday, May 2, 2016, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, the Rosary being recited at 7 PM. \r\n\r\nThere will be a Funeral Mass at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, May 3, 2016, followed by a graveside interment at the New Catholic Cemetery, FM Road 1077. A lunch reception for family and friends will take place at the home place to celebrate her life.
