It is with great sorrow that we report the death of Nancy Jo Wilkerson Barton of Kerrville, Texas on June 14, 2016. She was born on March 27, 1924 in Clifton, Texas to J. C. Wilkerson and Alma May Brightman Wilkerson. She grew up in Comanche, Texas and graduated from Comanche High School. She attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority and met the love of her life, Bob Barton.\r\n \r\nShe transferred to the University of Texas where she earned her degree in journalism. She travelled by train, cross country, on her own to Walla Walla, Washington, where she married Lt. Robert M. Barton prior to his assignment to the 90th Bomb Group Jolly Rogers Squadron as a B-24 pilot for service in the Pacific during WWII. After the war ended they resided in Houston. She continued her education at the University of Houston where she earned her teaching certificate. She began teaching in the Houston Independent School District at Sam Houston High School in 1960 where she taught English and Journalism. She made many friends in the faculty, staff and student body that she held dear for the rest of her life. She sponsored the award winning school newspaper The Aegis. This is where the true printers ink in her blood shown through. She took great pride in the quality product that her students and staff produced. Most of all and probably more importantly she took great pride in her student's lives and accomplishments. She was a mentor for many. The personal examples she set will continue to be an inspiration to all that knew her.\r\n \r\nHer support for the University of Texas and all their sport programs could never be questioned. The Astros and Spurs were not far behind.\r\n \r\nShe and Bob loved to travel at home and abroad. They were blessed with many, many wonderful journeys, all of which she could recount with amazing clarity and detail. The Cotswold District in England was their special spot. For their 50th Anniversary they celebrated by traveling around the world "on their own".\r\n \r\nShe was truly appreciative of her travelling companions and new friends they always magically met along the way. God granted them another fifteen years of marriage (65 in all), where they got to enjoy the journey of being the world's best grandparents.\r\n \r\nShe is survived by her sons Dr. Robert M. Barton, Jr., O.D. and wife Jackie, William Allen Barton, one sister Alma Jean Wetzel, Grandchildren Meredith Lynn Barton Peña and husband Ramiro, Robert Jackson Barton, James Allen Barton, great grandchildren Lily Mae Peña and Ramiro Joseph Peña, IV.
