Michael Ray (Mike) Earney I, 74, of Johnson City, Texas, passed away on July 1, 2017 in Kerrville, Texas. He was born in Albia, Iowa, to Clarence and Mary Beth Earney on April 12, 1943. Mike attended and graduated from Albia Community School District graduating in 1962. After graduation Mike joined the United States Air Force where after a 4 year commitment he was honorably discharged.\r\n \r\nAfter serving in the Air Force, Mike returned home to Albia where he met the love of his life, Mary Irene (nee Rose). After being married at the United Brethren Church in Albia Mike and Mary settled in Knoxville. During this time Mike attended the Toledo Meat Cutting School. Upon graduation they made their home in the Adel area outside of Des Moines where they were then blessed with 2 children (Mari-Renee and Michael Ray II). During the mid-1970's Mike moved the family to Mary's home town of Bussey where they purchased the Bussey General Store, renaming it Earney's General Store.\r\n \r\nIn 1982 Mike and the family moved to Texas. Initially, settling in Burnet when Mike was offered a position as Park Ranger with the National Park Service in Stonewall. Eventually, the family moved to Johnson City in the spring of 1983. In time, Mike applied for and was hired with the Secret Service as a Special Officer, assigned to the Lady Bird Johnson Protective Detail in Stonewall. This was one of the fondest periods of Mike's life. He has many stories and memories of Mrs. Johnson. Mike retired from the Secret Service in 2006. During his time in retirement Mike stayed busy attending soccer games, T-ball games as well as dance recitals of his grandkids (Stephen, Noah and Malea).\r\n \r\nMike is preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Mary; his parents Clarence Earney and Mary Beth Bakerink; sister Elizabeth Ann Earney; sisters-in-law Margaret Cline and Carolyn Earney; and step-father Eugene Bakerink.\r\n \r\nMike is survived by his daughter Mari-Renee Grossheim of Savannah, Texas and his son and daughter-in-law Michael and Dana Earney of Center Point, Texas. Mike is also survived by his brother Larry Earney of Hudson, Iowa; sister Judy (Jerry) Stahl of Columbia, Missouri; brother Clarence Earney also of Columbia. Mike is also survived by the grandchildren he adored: Stephen Grossheim of Savannah, Texas; Noah and Malea Earney of Center Point, Texas. Mike is also survived by several nieces and nephews: David (Jodie) Earney; Theresa Ivy; Brenda (James) Grindstaff; Jane Cline; Robert Earney; Dean (Yuriya) Earney, as well as numerous other family and friends.\r\n \r\nMike has requested to be cremated and that a memorial service be held in place of a funeral. The memorial service will take place at 10:00 AM on July 7, 2017 at the L.B.J. Event Center located at 227 Settlement Rd., Johnson City, TX 78636. Mike will be interred with Mary at Liberty Cemetery located in rural Marion County, Iowa at a later date.\r\n \r\nIn lieu of flowers Mike has requested that donations be made to Peterson Hospice located in Kerrville, Texas (www.petersonhospice.com).\r\n
