Mattie Elizabeth Butts Batto passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 25, 2024, at the age of.84 years. She was born on July 9, 1940, in Rockport, Texas, to Effie Jane Bartell and Eugene Hamilton Butts. At an early age she came to live with her beloved grandparents, Jack Victor and Diantha Elizabeth (Anderson) Bartell, who raised her.
Elizabeth graduated from Bandera High School in 1959 where she was a member of the band and National Honor Society. She was part of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls and earned the title of Worthy Advisor. She was a graduate of Draughon's Business College of San Antonio. Shortly after her graduation from high school she married the love of her life, Raymond H. Batto, Jr., on November 14, 1959. Their union was blessed with two daughters which were her pride and joy.
Elizabeth started her career at the Flying L Guest Ranch, Country Shopper and Bandera Locker Plant. She worked for many years at Collins of Texas in Medina, Texas, and for a brief time at Ferncliff Farms as a bookkeeper. She later began a long career with Bandera Bank (formerly First National Bank) in Bandera in the bookkeeping department and ended her banking career as their Cashier/ Vice-President. After retirement, she worked for a brief time as a bookkeeper for a real estate company. Always willing to help family, she and her husband took on her favorite job of caring for her great nephew, Dalton, and after retirement her niece's four young children. Kelton, Willow, Muzik, and Aria, until each started school.
She was a member of the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bandera. She was a recipient of the Archbishop Fury Medal for her work in transcribing church sacramental records for submission to the Archdiocese of San Antonio. She was involved with band boosters serving as an officer and organizing their concession stands and with 4-H programs as a project leader for the foods and clothing projects due to her daughters’ involvement in those organizations.
Elizabeth was an excellent cook and baker. She often shared her creations with others and various organizations. She was also a talented seamstress and made many outfits for her two daughters and other family members.
She is preceded in death by her grandparents, her parents, sisters, Camille Iness and Emma Garcia, and brothers, Ray Strickland, Kenneth Butts, Steven Butts, and Stanley Butts.
Elizabeth is survived by her husband of 64 years, Raymond, of Bandera, and her daughters. Elizabeth Bernadette (Bernie) Batto of Jourdanton, and Marie Antoinette (Toni) Batto, of Bandera. She is survived by her brother, Victor Strickland, and his wife Genie, of Bandera, She is also survived by her nephews and nieces, Brian Hewgley (Jeannie), Floyd Hamilton, Shanna Hewgley, Patricia Hamilton, Shaun MacMillan (Stacy), Lindsey Gonzales (Brandon), and Genie Cox (Tyler) and great nieces and nephews Nicolas and Claudio Hewgley; Grace and Audrey Hamilton; Dalton Parker; Kelton, Willow, Muzik, and Aria Raab; Nova and Atticus Gonzales; Ksenia, Jerry Lee, Lileigha, and Nadja Cox; Cheyenne and Iva Johnson; and Piper and Liam MacMillan;
Pallbearer is Dalton Shane Parker. Honorary Pallbearers are Kelton Emick, Willow Rachelle, Muzik Devoie, and Aria Poetry Raab.
The Rosary will be at Saint Stanislaus Catholic Church, 311 7th Street, Bandera, Texas on October 18, 2024 at 10:00 a.m., immediately followed by a Requiem Mass. Interment will at the church's Cemetery #1 next to the church.
