Margaret Landingham

Margaret Van Landingham was born September 6, 1929 in Camden, South Carolina and peacefully completed her journey with Alzheimer's on June 20, 2015 in Kerrville, Texas.\r\n \r\nMargaret was born and raised in Camden, South Carolina and was the youngest child of Stanford and Lucille Van Landingham. She attended Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina where she was an English major. She married William Burns in 1949 and was later divorced. In 1963 she moved to El Paso, Texas with her three children to begin a new life in the Southwest. She began working as a secretary for the International Boundary and Water Commission and later advanced her career in Civil Service where she became a Personnel Management Specialist. She spent the last three years of her career in Frankfurt, Germany where she toured Europe and added so many wonderful memories and friends to her life. Margaret retired to Kerr County in 1986 where she was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church. She served briefly on the Kerrville City Council and was instrumental in bringing the recycling program to Kerr County. She was known as the "Godmother of Recycling" and that made her so happy. Margaret was also an active member of the Hill Country Arts Foundation and Riverside Nature Center.\r\n \r\nShe always said her proudest accomplishment was her three children and she instilled in them integrity, compassion, a strong work ethic and the ability to live life to the fullest. She was a classy, Southern woman who could charm anyone with her accent and faced every obstacle of her life with great dignity and courage. Margaret was an artist, an avid gardener and loved to decorate her home. She was a great steward of the land and cared deeply about the environment and the needs of others.\r\n \r\nMargaret leaves behind her sons, Vance Burns of Coral Springs, Florida, Sam Burns of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina and daughter, Melissa Burns of Hunt, Texas. She is also survived by grandchildren, Allison (Chris) Billett and Meg Burns; great grandchildren, Liam and Mallory Billett and Davin, Madyson and Conner Burns; sister-in-law, Wilma Van Landingham; and numerous nieces and nephews.\r\n \r\nShe was preceded in death by her parents, Stanford and Lucille; sister, Dorothy McLeod; brother, Billy VanLandingham; and daughter-in-law, Amy Burns. Her sister, Jean Boyd, passed away June 22, 2015.\r\n \r\nA memorial service will be held Friday, June 26, 2015, 2:30 pm at the First Presbyterian Church in Kerrville, Texas with Rev. Rob Lohemeyer officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Camden, South Carolina.\r\n \r\nIn lieu of flowers donations may be made to Summer Dreams/Camp Honey Creek, P.O. Box 140, Hunt, Texas 78024 or the First Presbyterian Church in Kerrville, Texas.\r\n \r\nThe family would like to thank River Point of Kerrville, Hilltop Village and Peterson Hospice for all the special care Mama received during these last, difficult years of her journey.
