Lucy Anne Engle Potts, age 92, left this world for her home in Heaven on October 2, 2017, after a brief illness. She was born on the family farm near Sheridan, Missouri, July 9, 1925, the fourth child and only daughter of Milton and Geneva Grace (LaMar) Engle. She married Lyle Harrison Potts in Maryville, Missouri on August 23, 1947. Their marriage was blessed with four daughters, Julia, Nancy, Denise and Ruth, which Lucy continued raising after Lyle died in 1967. As a young widow age 41, she set a marvelous example of courage in adversity.\r\n\r\nLucy loved people and loved life! Wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to many, Lucy somehow was always able to interject joy into all of the opportunities and challenges life presented. She worked in Kansas City as a secretary and later assisted Lyle in operating Hiawatha Jewelry in Hiawatha, Kansas. After the family moved to Commerce, Texas, in 1966, she served as secretary at the East Texas State University Bookstore. Lucy retired as Manager of the University Bookstore in 1988. \r\n\r\nGrowing up with 3 brothers, Lucy learned to love sports. She started a girls softball league in Hiawatha, KS, so her daughters would have the opportunity to enjoy the game as much as she did. Looking for a way to be out of doors after work in Commerce, she took up the game of golf walking all 18 holes as long as she could and was Ladies Golf Champion at Sand Hills Country Club in 1990 and 1992. \r\n\r\nLucy is survived by her four daughters, Julia and Frank Dunlap, Nancy and Bill Montgomery, Denise and Danny Smith and Ruth Potts (Koester), 9 grandchildren, Stephanie (Dunlap) Megibben, Zane Montgomery, Victoria (Montgomery) Robbins, Ryon Montgomery, Robyn Smith, Eric Smith, Anthony (Tony) Koester, Matthew Koester, and Laura (Koester) Turner, and 7 great-grandchildren. Lucy also leaves many nieces, nephews and loving friends. \r\n\r\nPreceding her in death are her parents, husband Lyle, also brothers Allyn, Milton, Jr. and John Engle, and her beloved grandchildren Nicole Montgomery and Nathan Dunlap.\r\n\r\nLucy, Mom, Meemaw, you've been our nurturer, our example, and the rock of our family and we will miss you dearly.\r\n\r\nA lifetime Methodist, Lucy was an active member in Commerce until ill health prevented it.\r\n\r\nA memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church of Commerce, Texas, 1709 Highway 24 in Commerce at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 14. \r\n\r\nIn lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) or the First United Methodist Church, Commerce.
