Lila Florence Blocker Berner was born on December 13, 1937 to and passed away on December 7, 2018. She preceded in death by her parents Daniel R. Blocker and Helen Walker Blocker. Lila is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Frederick Ernest Berner Sr..Lila is survived by her siblings Dan Blocker, Barbara Blocker Wise and Mona Blocker Garcia. She is also survived by her sons Frederick Berner Jr. and Kevin Berner. Lila had two grand children Marisa Berner and Daniel Berner, she was the proud great grandmother of Zane Berner, Scarlett Berner, and Jude Berner.Lila is also survived by her lifelong friend Sue Massey Niehart.\r\n\r\nLila was raised in Alvin Texas where she graduated from Alvin High School. Lila attended both the University Texas and Texas Women's University. \r\n\r\nLila joined the Houston Police Department in 1960, and was the 11th female officer hired by HPD.Lila was first assigned to the Juvenile Division where she met her Frederick the love of her life.She then transferred to the Forgery Division where she became one of the first females promoted to detective. She then served for ten years in her position with the Harris County Organized Crime unit. She then rounded out her 30 years of service to the Houston Police Department in the Burglary and Theft unit. Lila was proud to have served as a police woman in a field that had been reserved for men in the years before women like her led the way for those that would later follow.\r\n\r\nLila and Fred raised their two sons in Alvin Texas. She and Fred enjoyed taking the family to many historical sites which instilled a love of history in both her sons. They visited historical sites throughout the South and Southwest including; Washington D.C., Revolutionary, Civil War battles sites, and Pueblo Indian ruins in the Southwest. They also traveled extensively throughout Mexico visiting Aztec. Mayan, Toltec, and Mixtec ruins\r\n\r\nLila and Fred retired to the West Texas hill country outside of Vanderpool. The purchased a piece of land and built a small one bedroom home that sits at the juncture of two creeks. A few years later they built their dream home on the same property. Lila enjoyed the outdoors, she loved the flora and fauna of the West Texas hill country. She marveled at the beauty of the clear water and the cedar trees. Lila and Fred were welcomed by their many new friends in the hill country and were made to feel right at home. Lila was always thankful for that. Lila and Fred enjoyed working on their property and going on long walks together, they also spent many years traveling together, visiting family and friends and collecting antiques along the way. Lila felt fortunate to have had an extended retirement of 28 years. She loved her family and friends dearly.\r\n\r\nThere will be a viewing at Grimes Funeral Home in Bandera Texas on Wednesday, December 12th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Church services will be held on December 13th at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Utopia Texas, followed by a funeral service at the Vanderpool Cemetary in Vanderpool Texas and then return to the First United Methodist Church for a post services reception.\r\n\r\nA special thanks to Lila and Fred's friends Evelyn Le'Bouf, David Rainey, and Dexter Rainey for all the help over the years and assisting with local arrangements for the upcoming services.
