Larence (Larry) Ervin Gazaway, 67 years old of Utopia, Texas died August 11, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas. Larry was also known by his friends as “Sport”. He was born in Hondo, Texas to Oscar Joseph Gazaway and Kathryn DeWitt Gazaway on July 27, 1956.
Larry graduated from Utopia High School in 1974 and attended Southwest Texas Junior College and Sam Houston State University. He retired from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department where he spent more than 30 years as a Park Ranger. Most of those years were spent at Garner State Park where he made many lifelong friends. An avid outdoorsman, he loved fishing, hunting, gardening, grilling and spending time with his friends and his dog, Mudcat.
Larry is preceded in death by parents and grandparents - Ervin Lee “Jack” and Emma Gazaway and Larence and Bessie DeWitt.
Larry is survived by siblings: Sherry Payne of Grapevine, Texas, Patsy (Don) Halk of Woodway, Texas and Henry Michael Gazaway of Lufkin, Texas; nephews: Darrell (Tiffany) Halk of Argyle, Texas, Christopher Baker of Grapevine, Texas; nieces: Lauren (Darren) Crawford of Utopia, Texas and Erin (Nicole) Ortiz of Niederwald, Texas; great-nieces: Rylie and Macee Halk of Argyle, Texas and great-nephew, Jordan Ortiz of Niederwald, Texas; and other family members and friends who were always family.
Memorial services will be held on September 9, 2023, at 10:00 am at the Grimes Bandera Funeral Chapel in Bandera, Texas with Darrell Halk officiating. Private burial will be done later at the Haby Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Grimes Bandera Funeral Chapel.
