John Melvin Waggoman, Jr.

July 11, 1936 — November 2, 2024

John Waggoman, Jr., passed away peacefully on November 2, 2024, following a brief illness.

He will be interred next to his beloved wife, Sue, at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston following a Masonic graveside service.

He was born on July 11, 1936, in Ft. Worth, Texas, but spent his early years in the San Francisco California Bay Area during the Second World War. His family had moved to Mare Island where his father had taken a job at Kaiser Shipyards and his mother taught school.

The family returned to North Texas after the War. Upon graduating high school, John became a heavy equipment operator for the W.O. Pelfrey Company and worked as a “roughneck” in the West Texas oil fields. He later sold drill bits and machinery for Hughes Tool Company. One afternoon, after his shift ended on the oil rig near Snyder, Texas, he borrowed his boss’ car and drove as fast as he could to Ft. Worth for a date with Sue Brance whom he had met at a church social. They later married on September 19, 1959, at the Arlington Heights Methodist Church and enjoyed over 56 years of marriage.

In 1965, John, Sue and their young son, Jud, moved to Kerrville in the Texas Hill Country where John managed Hill Country Cablevision for many years. He later became a commercial real estate broker and sold commercial property in and around San Antonio and throughout South Texas.

John and Sue spent their retirement years living on their ranch in the hills near Bandera where they raised exotic game, enjoyed traveling, exploring gastronomic cuisine and sharing time with their grandchildren.

John served in the Texas Air National Guard, is an alumnus of Schreiner College, was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, a member of Alzafar Shrine and is past-President of the Kerrville Rotary Club.

He is survived by his sister Ann Waggoman, son Jud Waggoman, granddaughter Lee Grest and family and grandson Brance Waggoman and family.

The family expresses its gratitude to Riverside Health and Rehabilitation and Alamo Hospice for their kind and compassionate care of John and request donations be made to favorite charities in lieu of flowers.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Grimes Bandera Funeral Chapel.
