Joe Meurer Sr.

November 14, 1922 — October 8, 2019

JOE H. MEURER, SR. passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at his home surrounded by his loving wife, his children and grandchildren. Joe was 96.\r\n\r\nJoe was born on November 14, 1922 in Bastrop, Bastrop County, Texas. He spent his early years in and around Rockne, Red Rock, and Sandy Creek. Later his family relocated to the Austin area. In 1945 Joe came to Kerrville. He worked for the City of Kerrville, the Kerrville Fire Department and drove cars for West Texas Auto Co. (the test fleet) testing the durability of tires. \r\n\r\nIn 1947 Joe met Lorraine Grona. On June 4, 1948 they were married in Notre Dame Catholic Church. This past June Joe and Lorraine celebrated their 71st Wedding Anniversary.\r\n\r\nJoe was a member of Notre Dame Catholic Church and was an usher for many years.\r\n\r\nJoe was and always will be a Cowboy. It was his passion. That ambition was accomplished when he was hired by the USDA Entomology Station in Kerrville. He started as a wrangler working mainly in Camp Bullis and Camp Stanley. He took great pride in the skills he possessed. Part of his duties was rounding up cattle for screw worm fly testing. He said all you need is a little skill, a good horse, a comfortable saddle and a border collie that knows his job. Joe had all four. The years working at Camp Stanley and Camp Bullis were some of his happiest times. Later he worked in the lab assisting with the testing of samples in an effort to eradicate the screw worm flies, samples that were taken from some of the same cattle he once wrangled. He was with the USDA for 23 years.\r\n\r\nJoe was preceded in death by his mother Magdalena (Lena) Hilbig and his father George Meurer; step-mother Mary Annie Meurer, brother John Meurer, an infant sister, Elizabeth Magdalena Meurer, sister Mary Agnes Blackman, and brother James Vincent Meurer.\r\n\r\nJoe is survived by his wife Lorraine Grona Meurer; and his sister Margaret Rose Sprouse of Dripping Springs.
