Jeffrey Sabins

January 21, 1949 — October 17, 2014

Jeffrey Lee "Jeff" Sabins, known as Duffy to family and close friends, passed away with family by his side, at his ranch home on Friday, October 17, 2014, after a two year battle with cancer. He was 65. He was born January 21, 1949 in Houston, Texas, the middle child of the family.\r\n \r\nLike the rest of his family, he spent a lot of his pre-school years at his grandfather's ranch in Kerrville. He spent most of his school days in Corpus Christi and his hometown of Houston where he graduated from Memorial High School in 1967. Jeff tried his hand at college, at the University of Houston, but found his calling in other endeavors. When his father asked him to come back to Kerrville and help out on the family ranch, he gladly took the opportunity, and after building a home there, he had lived in Kerrville for the last 35 years. He met and married his wife, Shirley Davis Sabins in Kerrville and they had two children. Jeff was active with his children in Kerr County 4-H, raising hogs and calves, where they had won several ribbons and prizes. He was also active with his son in local football and baseball leagues. Jeff was also an accomplished hunter and fisherman. A wall in his home is covered with several mounts of large buck deer he had taken on the family ranch and South Texas. He also has mounts of large redfish taken from the Laguna Madre, one of his favorite fishing places.\r\n \r\nJeff found his career calling in the local building and construction industry where after developing his salesmanship skills at other jobs, he joined M.G. Builders of Kerrville in Contractor Sales in the late 80's. His skill in contractor sales brought him in contact with many colleagues and friends in the construction industry across Kerr and adjacent counties. In the course of his work, Jeff drove his trusty Chevy Z71 pickup, which he bought new, over 250,000 miles across many miles of dusty unpaved roads where he would visit his construction sites from slab formation to inside finishing work to check and see that his clients were satisfied with the materials he sold them.\r\n \r\nHe was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Sabins.\r\n \r\nJeff is survived by his son, Robert Lee; daughter, Jessica Diane; and three grandchildren, Paige and Lucas Perez and Chance Sabins. Also surviving him is his brother, Dugan Scott Sabins; sister, Debbie Sabins Grun; nephew, Trey Scott Grun; niece, Vallye Turia Sawyer and several grand nephews and grand nieces. \r\n \r\nVisitation will be held Saturday, October 25, 2014 from 10 AM-12 PM at Grimes Funeral Chapels.\r\n \r\nThe family would like to acknowledge Dr.'s Michael Gnuechtel and Valerian Chyle, Jr. for their tireless and professional effort to treat Jeff during his fight with cancer.\r\n \r\nMemorial donations for Jeff may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Kerrville Dietert Senior Center or Peterson Hospice.\r\n \r\n[contact-form-7 id="73" title="Send Condolences"]\r\n
