Janice M. Shafer, age 79, of Flying L Ranch in Bandera, TX and Lakes of the North in Elmira, Michigan departed this world after a series of health issues, on Tuesday, June 4, 2019. She was born in St. Joseph, Michigan to Arnold G. and Maria E. (Antonovitsch) Damaske on February 22, 1940.\r\n\r\nJanice married Richard A. Shafer on January 9, 1971 in Trinity Lutheran Church of St. Joseph, Michigan.\r\n\r\nMrs. Shafer graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1958, and from Benton Harbor Business College. She attended Lake Michigan Community College in Benton Harbor, Michigan and Lakeland Community College in Mentor, Ohio. She was employed by Clark Equipment Company (later known as VME) in Benton Harbor as an Administrative Assistant. In 1986, Janice and her husband, transferred with the Company to Ohio where they both continued to work and school until retirement in 1992. Upon retirement, they moved permanently to their 20 year northern Michigan vacation retreat.\r\n\r\nJanice enjoyed downhill skiing, snowmobiling, gardening, nature, photo1graphy, dancing and especially traveling throughout the U. S. in their RV with her husband every chance they could. She was also active in volunteer projects for Lakes of the North where they lived; and for many years, Janice and Richard were co-editors for Lakes of the North's Monthly Newsletter.\r\n\r\nMrs. Shafer's parents preceded her in death.\r\n\r\nJanice Shafer is survived by her husband; step-son Kory A. (Donna) Shafer of Buchanan, Michigan; step-daughter, Rochelle A. Roberts of Sheffield, Texas; two step-grandsons, Kristopher A. Shafer of Traverse City, Michigan and Chad D. Shafer of Royal Oak, Michigan; a step-granddaughter, Courtney L. Shafer and brother-in-law George W. (Janet) Shafer of Berrien Springs, Michigan.\r\n\r\nVisitation will be held Sunday, June 9, 2019 from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm at Grimes Funeral Chapel in Bandera. After the visitation, a service will follow immediately with Rev. Brady Eggleston officiating. Burial will be in North Shore Memory Gardens of Hagar Shores, Michigan at a later date.\r\n\r\nMemorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, P.O.
