Gwendolyn Altwein, 88 years old, died in Hospice at River Hills Nursing and Rehab on Sunday, April 23, 2017. She was born in Sherman, Texas on January 16, 1929, the daughter of Don and Ava Evans, now deceased. In 1960, she married Virgil Altwein.\r\n \r\nAfter graduating from Lee College with many honors, she became a Regent of that institution in Baytown, Texas, serving for six years. Having majored in art, she became an established sculpturer in Baytown and later in Kerrville, having been active in the HCAF in Ingram and Kerrville KACC.\r\n \r\nDuring the 60's, she and her husband were members of two dance clubs and later in the 90's, members of a square dancing club. In the 70's, they joined the Houston Bicycle Club, twice touring the continent and England in which parts of the Tour de France were covered in the Alps and Pyrenees.\r\n \r\nIn between these activities, Gwen was a member of the Junior League of Baytown, assisting with cerebral palsied children, and volunteering at a local hospital. The Junior League sponsored many charity Broadway produced shows locally in which Gwen either danced or helped with the scenery. She later became a drummer for the Saints Alive Group in the First United Methodist Church in Kerrville. She sometimes substituted as an elementary art teacher. She became a member of D.A.R.'s through research, travel and correspondence.\r\n \r\nShe is survived by her husband of 56 years, Virgil; her daughter, Pam and her husband, Saif Rashaed; three grandchildren, Aziz, Aaron and Barry; a brother, Von Evans and his wife, Vonnie of Kerrville; two nieces, Tuki Duncan and Jill Pearson; and nephew, Dr. Von Landon Evans, Jr.\r\n \r\nVisitation will be from 6-8 PM, Friday, April 28, 2017 at Grimes Funeral Chapels.\r\n \r\nMemorials may be made to Freeman-Fritts Animal Shelter, 515 Spur 100, Kerrville, Texas 78028; Guide Dogs of Texas, 1503 Allena Dr., San Antonio, Texas 78213; or to First United Methodist Church, 321 Thompson Dr., Kerrville, Texas 78028.\r\n \r\nThanks to Dr. Grocki, Dr. Oi, Dr. Oei, Dr. Rabinowicz, Dr. Ramon-Gonzales, and for the immeasurable love and support of Juanita, Heather, Brian and Dr. Grocki of Alamo Hospice, and to Karen and the River Hills staff.\r\n
