Ghent Graves, Jr

Ghent Graves, the son of Dr. E. Ghent and Helen Cummings Graves, was born January 3, 1928 in Houston and died on August 14, 2017 in Austin, TX. He graduated from the University of Texas and obtained a graduate degree in genetics from the University of South California. His degree in medicine was from Baylor College of Medicine. \r\n He married Sally Sample in 1953 and they are the parents of Clark and Catherine. His medical internship was at the University of Wisconsin and after serving two years in the Navy overseas and in Norfolk, VA, he completed his residency program at Southwestern Medical School. He was the 4th generation of his family to be a medical doctor. He joined his father's medical practice in Houston and shortly after, developed a pulmonary department at Methodist Hospital. He was associate clinical professor of Baylor Medical College and chief of staff at the Methodist Hospital for several years.\r\n Ghent was an outstanding athlete and particularly enjoyed tennis, golf and snow skiing. He was devoted to his family friends and his faith. He lived a life of service to others not only in his profession, but in his personal life. He was affiliated with many clubs and medical organizations over his lifetime and served with honor within the governing body of many of those organizations.\r\n He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sally Sample Graves; children, Clark and Catherine Graves Riekert (Paul) both of Austin, TX. He was an incredibly devoted grandfather and perfect role model to his 10 grandchildren. His grandchildren will miss his complete unconditional love and unwavering support. They are: Catherine Graves Claydon (Ben), Joseph Graves, Sara Graves McDonald (James), John Graves, Paul Scott, Virginia Scott Prowse (Blair), Ghent Scott, Frances Scott McCloskey (Jimmy), Laura Schaeffer and Lily Sellers. He also has 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Helen Stahmann of Australia, Marilyn Lummis of Houston, sister in law, Frances Sample of Longview, TX, their children and grandchildren and beloved nephews, nieces and cousins, too numerous to name.\r\n Ghent was cheerful and optimistic, he was kind and always the champion of the underdog. He found his greatest joy in serving others. He loved his family, he loved his friends and he loved his church. He was honest in all that he did and set a noble example to all of his posterity of what it means to live your faith, by your word and actions every single day. He is missed.\r\n A viewing will be held on Friday, August 18, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Grimes Funeral Chapels.\r\n Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 202 Coronado Dr., Kerrville, TX.\r\n The Graves family requests that in lieu of flowers that you perform an act of kindness by teaching a first grade child to read, send a child to church camp or donate to any cause of your choice that lightens the burden of another!! \r\n\r\n\r\n
