Gerd Williams

May 1, 1935 — August 23, 2021

Gerd Williams, 86, of Utopia, passed away peacefully in her home on August 23, 2021. Gerd was born May 1, 1935 in Bergen, Norway to Mikal and Helga (Bergesen) Monsen. She was educated at Christi Krybbe and Bergen Katedolskole. She lived in Bergen throughout her childhood, with the exception of 1944-45, when she was a wartime evacuee in the village of Etne, Norway. In 1954, Gerd traveled to New York, marking her 19th birthday en route. After an initial position with Lord and Taylor department stores, she worked in the insurance industry in Manhattan as a clerk and receptionist. Gerd married John Robert Williams of Noblesville, Indiana on August 8, 1959 at Kings Point in New York. While supporting her husband in his US Navy and later civilian maritime career, Mrs. Williams lived in Pensacola, Florida, San Francisco and Long Beach, California, and Stamford, Connecticut. In 1967, the growing Williams family moved to the Canal Zone, Panama, where John was employed as a Panama Canal pilot. Gerd moved to Portland, Texas, in 1978 when John joined the Aransas-Corpus Christi Pilots. Upon John's retirement in 1998, Gerd made her final move to her beloved Utopia. She is preceded in death by her husband, who passed away in 2019, and by her parents, her brother Magnar Monsen and sister Turid Quegan. She is survived by four children, daughters Lisa (Tim) Keith-Lucas of Carrabelle, Florida and Karen Edwards of Fayetteville, Georgia and sons Robert Williams of Utopia and John (Kellie) Williams of Corpus Christi. She is also survived by grandchildren Darwin, Thea and Alastair Keith-Lucas, Kristen Morton, Nick Edwards, and Madeline and Andrew Williams, five adorable great-grandchildren, three sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews. Often she would say, when her loving family was gathered with her, ''I came to this country all alone, and now look at how many we've become.''
