E.G. Meter Jr.

November 5, 1931 — August 10, 2015

Dr. E.G. Van Meter, Jr. passed away peacefully at home on August 10, 2015. The day he passed away was his deceased Mother's birthday. \r\n \r\nHe was born at home in Dallas, Texas to E.G. and Viola Wade Van Meter on November 5, 1931. They resided in Dallas until he was nine years old. \r\n \r\nHe was a sickly child and the family doctor told his parents he needed to be out in the country in fresh air. His parents were able to buy a parcel of land out in the country in Irving, Texas, so E.G. grew up living a life kind of like Tom Sawyer. He grew up hunting, fishing and camping out on the river at night with his fishing lines set out and sleeping on a fresh grass mat under the stars. He was a Boy Scout and became an Eagle Scout and was awarded the Order of the Arrow. \r\n \r\nHe graduated from Irving High School in 1949 and went on to the University of Texas at Austin where he earned a B.S. degree in Bacteriology. In 1954, he entered the University of Texas Dental School in Houston, Texas. \r\n \r\nWhile in dental school, he met his future wife, Shirley Kauffman. They were married in his junior year. In his senior year, he received an Air Force Commission. This was a special blessing for E.G. and Shirley as they had just had their first child, and the 2nd Lieutenant pay was very much needed. \r\n \r\nAfter graduation from dental school, he was in the Air Force for three years at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, North Carolina. He eventually came to work at the V.A. Hospital in Kerrville, Texas and retired from there after 20 years of service. \r\n \r\nUpon retirement, he and Shirley enjoyed traveling, and he especially loved going on fishing trips and going to Hawaii. \r\n \r\nHe is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley, and their three children, Monica Enriquez (and husband Joe), Melissa Thompson (and husband David) and Andy Van Meter; four grandchildren, Jessica Comiskey (and husband Will) and Trevor, Jared and Corbin Thompson; and two great grandchildren, A.J. and Carsen Comiskey. He is also survived by sister, Doris Chambers.\r\n \r\nHe loved his family and his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was a kind and humble man who was appreciated and loved by many people. He often said he couldn't imagine living a life any more wonderful than the life he'd lived. \r\n \r\nThe family has planned a private service and burial will be at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. \r\n \r\nAt this time, the family offers deep appreciation and gratitude for the loving care given to E.G. A special thanks to Hospice and Dr. James Young.\r\n
