Edward Lorence Walter, 72, died on Monday, Aug. 3, 2015, at Sid Peterson Regional Hospital in Kerrville, Texas.\r\n\r\nHe was born as one of eight children to Kenneth and Bernice Walter, on Dec. 16, 1942, in Fredericksburg, Texas.\r\n\r\nA memorial service with military honors is planned at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2015, in Grimes Funeral Chapels in Kerrville.\r\n\r\nAlthough he spent his early years in Fredericksburg, his family moved to San Antonio, where graduated from Highlands High School and met and married the love of his life, Amy Joyce Doak, on June 3, 1964. In 2014, the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary among family and friends.\r\n\r\nThe Walters started their family right away and would have three sons, Edward Alan, Steven Wayne and Michael Shane.\r\nHe entered the United States Marines Corps and was committed and loyal in active service to this nation for 20 years. He served two tours in Okinawa, Japan, and one in Vietnam during the Vietnam war. \r\n\r\nHis station assignments took Walter and his young, growing family overseas to Japan and across the country to California, Tennessee, New Mexico and more.\r\n\r\nHe retired and was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps at the rank of Gunnery Sergeant on April 1, 1981.\r\n\r\nHe was a recipient of the Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 star, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal with 5 star and the Sea Service Ribbon.\r\n\r\nCivilian life after military service included work in injection molding manufacturing in Kerrville and San Antonio.\r\n\r\nWalter was a proud family man who believed in spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren, which meant many days camping and boating on the Highland Lakes or attending sporting events and whatever other activities his loved ones pursued.\r\n\r\nSurvivors include: his wife of 51 years, Joyce Walter of Kerrville; sons and daughters-in-law, Edward Alan and Ellen Walter, of Boerne, Steven and Corrinna Walter, of North Bend, Washington, and Michael and Lisa Walter of Fredericksburg, and, five grandchildren, Brittany Noel Jordan and her husband, Wade, of Coulee City, Washington; Rory Walter, of North Bend, Washington; Austin Walter, of Fredericksburg, and Connor and Logan Walter, both of Boerne. Also surviving are: a brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Linda Walter of Kerrville; a sister-in-law and spouse, Ruby and Jim Money of San Antonio; siblings, Kathleen Walter Gregory of San Antonio; Gary Walter, of Sisterdale, and Paul Walter, of Kerrville; sister-in-law, Betty Mills of Baytown and other family members.\r\n\r\nHe was preceded in death by: his parents, Kenneth and Bernice Walter; two brothers, Kenneth Walter, Jr. and Ralph Walter, and a sister, Josephine "Josie" Walter.\r\n\r\nThose who so choose, are invited to send donations in Walter's honor to cancer research or the charity of one's choice. \r\n \r\n
