Dub Haney

October 2, 1927 — May 4, 2017

George Wyatt "Dub" Haney, age 89 of Ingram, passed away Thursday, May 4, 2017 at his residence. He was born at home on October 2, 1927 to L. T. and Ida Lee Binford Haney in Grimes County, Texas. Dub was a husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle.\r\n \r\nHe married May Estes Haney June 18, 1948. She died in a car accident on November 13, 1954.\r\n \r\nDub then married Raye Joan Pickett Haney on April 27, 1957 in Mountain Home, Texas. Raye and Dub were married 59 years.\r\n \r\nDub is survived by: daughters Gayle Haney, and Joan Salsbury and her husband Craig; granddaughter Kate Salsbury and fiancé Gavin Rieke; sister Geraldine Haney Voelter of Sugar Land, Texas; brother Jack Haney and wife Mary Helen of Huntsville, Texas; niece Pat Angell and husband Jim; sister-in-law Loraine and brother-in-law Jim Haynie of Mountain Home; Susie Hey; and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.\r\n \r\nDub grew up in Navasota, Texas, and graduated from Navasota High School. He enlisted in the Navy during World War II, and was sent to San Diego, California, for boot camp. While he was in San Diego the war ended, and while waiting to be discharged Dub was assigned to Balboa Navel Hospital to support wounded airmen and other personal. Dub so loved this country we call home. Dub exercised his right as a citizen to vote in all levels of elections from town to county to state and the national level. He also wrote, e-mailed, and faxed letters to, and even called, state and national elected officials for years. You should see the names, numbers, and addresses of elected officials he had in his phone.\r\n \r\nDub and May moved to Mountain Home, TX in 1949 and he was soon hired as the Postmaster there. After May's death in 1954 and Dub's marriage to Raye in 1957 he continued to be Postmaster there for a total of twenty-three years. During those years the Post Office was housed in three different locations. The first Post Office location Dub was at was also a gas station and small store. The second location had another gas station along with the Post office (these were the last years that Highway 27 West was highly traveled before Interstate 10 opened between Kerrville and Junction, Texas). Then Dub oversaw the planning and construction of the third and present location of the Post Office and the moving process. He was there for a few years before being transferred to the Ingram, Texas, Post Office. Dub was Postmaster in Ingram for four years, where he again oversaw the planning and part of the construction of the present Post Office before being transferred to the Comfort, Texas, Post Office. Dub was Postmaster at Comfort for six years and once again oversaw the construction of, and occupied, the present Post Office. Dub retired from the Comfort Post Office with a total of thirty-three years at all three offices. After retirement from the Postal Service Dub went to work at Ingram State Bank working with customer relations then became Officer of Customer Relations. When the bank closed Dub worked at Kerrville Funeral Home selling pre-need plans and helping with services. He then helped with signing-up clients for Ultrafit before it even opened. After Ultrafit opened Dub worked there helping and encouraging the clients while they worked out/exercised. Dub then started working at Cecil Atkisson Motors driving dealer trade vehicles for 19 years.\r\n \r\nDub was very community-and church-oriented. While living at Mountain Home, early in their marriage, Dub and Raye were members of Sunset Baptist Church. They joined First Baptist Church Kerrville in 1974, and most recently joined Trinity Baptist Church in Kerrville. Over the years Dub has been part of several organizations: Brotherhood at Sunset and First Baptist; Hill Country Cowboy Camp Meeting Director and Trustee, where he also was known for being the ‘tea maker' and server for many, many years; Ingram PTA; volunteer in the Mountain Home Fire Department; in Hunt-Ingram Lions Club; was in the National Association of Postmasters of the United States (NAPUS), and held every office in the Texas state chapter; volunteered at the Texas State Arts & Craft Fair; was in the Kerrville Noon Rotary for over forty years and was a Paul Harris Fellow; was a Deacon at First Baptist Church and was made Deacon Emeritus there; Kerrville Chamber Ambassador; and was named Co-Citizen of the Year with his wife Raye in 1996. In April 2016 he was made co-lifetime member of the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce with Raye, and February 28 will now and forever be Dub & Raye Haney Day. On February 28, 2017 a plaque with Dub & Raye's picture along with the proclamation given last year was put up in the lobby of the Kerrville Area Chamber office and a reception was held at that time. In September 2016 Dub was recognized as one of the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce 35+ year members after 36 years of consecutive membership. Dub was the only individual member recognized in either the 35+ or 50+ year group. All other memberships were businesses. Dub also visited friends when he could if they were in the hospital. Two weeks ago the Honor Flight people called and had received Dub's paperwork and said he was to be in the group going in September to Washington DC. That was something he had been so wanting to do, and he did know that they had called for him to go on the Honor Flight.\r\n \r\nDub is preceded in death by his second wife Raye, and his first wife May, his parents L. T. and Ida Lee Haney, and his brother-in-law Alvin Voelter.\r\n \r\nVisitation is from 5:30-7:30 Friday, May 12, 2017 at Grimes Funeral Chapels.\r\n \r\nMemorial services will be at 2 PM, Saturday, May 13, 2017 at Trinity Baptist Church officiated by Rev. John Wheat and Rev. James Ervin.\r\n \r\nOur thanks to Trinity Baptist Church for all the love and friendship, new and old, that Dub has felt since being at Trinity.\r\n \r\nThank you, also to Trinity Baptist Church and the community for all of the prayers, love and support that was given for Dub.\r\n \r\nThe family wants to thank Dr. James Young for his many years of care for Dub. Also, Peterson Hospice and most especially his nurse Lisa.\r\n \r\nIn lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Trinity Baptist Church, 800 Jackson Rd., Kerrville, TX 78028 or Hill Country Youth Ranch, P. O. Box 67, Ingram, TX 78025.\r\n
