Doug Johnson

September 16, 1929 — July 4, 2017

Douglas Wayne "DaDa" Johnson passed peacefully from this life the morning of Tuesday, July 4, 2017 at his home. He was born September 16, 1929, in Tipton, OK, to Horace and Winnie Boatman Johnson. \r\n \r\nDoug served in the Army from 1954-1956 with a tour of duty in Korea in artillery and received the Good Conduct Medal.\r\n \r\nBefore joining the military, Doug worked in farming following a harvesting crew all the way to Canada. He also pulled cotton (harvested the entire boll, while picking cotton required getting the cotton out of the boll).\r\n \r\nUpon honorable discharge from the Army, Doug returned to NW Texas where he attended welding school in Odessa. He moved to Hobbs, NM, in 1963 to work for ACE Welding and later PEMCO. He met a life long friend there named Frank Carrasco.\r\n \r\nDoug married Betty Bartram on June 19,1954. They had two children, Tina and Doug Jr. They enjoyed bowling and playing bingo together. \r\n \r\nAfter Betty's death in 1979, Doug moved to Ruidoso, NM. There he met and married Louise Oliphant on March 22, 1988. \r\n \r\nDoug and Louise traveled in the 1990's through the midwest and up to Alaska. They settled back in NM. \r\n \r\nIn 2000, Doug and Louise moved to San Angelo. In 2005, they moved to Menard where Doug enjoyed fishing the San Saba River for catfish and helped his daughter Davella feed goats, teaching her to drive a tractor, weld a bead, and about irrigation. \r\n \r\nIn 2007, Doug and Louise returned to Ruidoso near his other daughters. He enjoyed going to the casino to play the slot machines. He was also known for "dumpster diving" as the family joked about it. They would refurbish any items he retrieved. He once opened the lid of a dumpster only to come face to face with a black bear. \r\n \r\nAfter Louise passed away in 2010, Doug chose to move to Kerrville next door to daughter, Davella, in 2011. They had visited before and Doug loved the area. He brought with him his beloved cat, Lincoln.\r\n \r\nHe joined the Heart of the Hills VFW Post 1480 where he visited frequently befriending many a person. He especially enjoyed the Friday night suppers. \r\n \r\nDoug was preceded in death by his parents and spouses. Also preceding him were his only son, Douglas Wayne Johnson, Jr.; brothers, Marion, Charles, Truman, and Larry; grandsons, Eric Lee Flemens and Billy R. Gardner; and daughter, Joy L. Dube.\r\n \r\nDoug is survived by brother, Troy Johnson and wife Gayle of Wichita Falls, TX; daughters, Tina Flemens and husband Myron of Hobbs, NM, P.J. Schuster and husband Mike of Ruidoso, NM, and Davella Ryno and husband Tommy of Kerrville, TX; grandsons, Lance Flemens, Don Nunley, Jeremy Lay, and Zachery Gugliotti; granddaughter, Dee Philipp; great grandchildren, Davannah, Jamie, Oleah, J.C., Henry, Ava, and Morgan; also numerous nieces and nephews and many good friends and family. \r\n \r\nA memorial service is scheduled for 12 Noon, Saturday, July 15, 2017 at the Heart of the Hills VFW Post 1480 officiated by Dr. Joe Taylor. Doug's ashes will be scattered at a later time in a private family ceremony. \r\n \r\nIn lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, the local VFW Post 1480 or to one's favorite charity or church. \r\n
