Donald O. "Nick" Nichols, 87, of Boerne, Texas passed away on October 27, 2018, in the town of Boerne. He was born in Mingo, Iowa, to James and Stella Nichols on January 12, 1931. He married his beloved Vera C. Nichols on July 14, 1952, in Wichita Falls, Texas.\r\nNick served for 21 years in the U.S. Air Force during which time he was stationed in Morocco, Africa, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and stateside in Texas, Nebraska, Indiana, and South Dakota. Following retirement from active duty, he remained a member of the civil service for an additional 13 years until 1984 retiring for the final time from Offutt AFB, Nebraska.\r\n\r\nIn their retirement, Nick and Vera traveled the western and southern U.S. and finally settled in Bandera, Texas, drawn by the beauty of the Texas Hill Country. Nick was heavily involved in Alcoholics Anonymous, helping guide members of the community through his hard-learned life experiences. Nick was an active member of A/A for 37 years and enjoyed socializing, always ready with the quick wit. There wasn't anything Nick couldn't fix or build, spending hours on end in his workshop, sometimes worrying Vera. Nick's strong will prevented him from ever giving up on a project.\r\n\r\nNick is preceded in death by his wife Vera, mother, father, and brothers Earl and Darrel Nichols. Nick is survived by daughter Karen Folkerts and husband Thomas of Roseville, California, and son Will Nichols and wife Connie of Enumclaw, Washington, brother Dale and wife Brenda of Panama City, Florida, grandchildren Dr. Nichelle Renk (Travis), Sara Chiabai (Jay), Catherine Macbeth (Ryan), Jake Folkerts, Clay Folkerts, Jessica Higgins (Garth), Amy Zimney (Eric), and eight great-grandchildren. Nick greatly enjoyed the time he spent with his grandchildren during their frequent visits to the Bandera home.\r\n\r\nFuneral services will begin with a visitation at 9:00 am on Saturday, November 3 at Grimes Funeral Chapel in Bandera, Texas, with burial at St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery on Highway 1077 in Bandera. \r\n\r\nMemorials may be given to Alamo Hospice. The family would like to thank the personnel at Morning Ministries at Menger Springs for the care provided while Nick was a resident.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
