Demmie Gammon Mayfield was born in Kerrville, Texas, June 27, 1932, the only child of Greydon and Julie (Witzin) Mayfield. He died in San Antonio, Texas, on October 4, 2016. \r\n\r\nAfter graduating with honors from Schreiner Institute, he was invited to enroll at the University of Texas (Austin) in the prestigious Plan II Honors Program. After graduation, he earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1958. He completed post-graduate training in California and Texas and then served the Clinical Neuropharmacological Research Center in Washington D.C. until 1964.\r\n\r\nDr. Mayfield earned professional certifications in psychiatry/neurology and addictive medicine. He then began a career in academics and research, building psychiatry programs in the medical schools of Duke, Brown and Kansas Universities. He returned to his Texas roots in 1988, serving as a professor of psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, through 1997.\r\n\r\nThroughout his career, Mayfield advanced knowledge in his profession by co-authoring dozens of scientific articles and abstracts. He presented workshops throughout the United States and in Spain, Australia, Mexico, The Netherlands, Thailand, Poland, Canada, Greece, Austria and Scotland.\r\n\r\nA man of adventure, Mayfield enjoyed scuba diving and cycling throughout the world-often as the oldest participant in his touring group. Always unpretentious, he was known for his keen mind, insightful observations and dry wit. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Schreiner University Board of Trustees and was a constant encourager to other trustees, employees and students. In September, Schreiner honored his generosity by establishing the Demmie G. Mayfield Endowed Chair in Science and Undergraduate Research.\r\n\r\nPrivate burial will be held at Glen Rest Cemetery, with the Rev. Sam M. Junkin, a childhood friend, officiating. Memorials may be made to the Demmie G. Mayfield Endowed Chair at Schreiner University, Campus Box 6229, 2100 Memorial Blvd, Kerrville, Texas 78028.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
