Daniel Joseph Burns (Dan) passed away from cancer on the evening of Thursday, May 11, 2017 at Peterson Regional Medical Center in Kerrville, Texas.\r\n\r\nA resident of Camp Verde and a member of Riverhill Country Club and Notre Dame Catholic Church in Kerrville, he was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on January 26, 1941 and raised in nearby Plaquemine where as a natural athlete he began a lifelong active association with sports; first as a quarterback at his local high school and later on the basketball and baseball teams of the U.S. Army's 3rd Infantry Division in Wurzberg, Germany.\r\n\r\nIn his business and professional career, he was the president of United Companies Life Insurance Company headquartered in Baton Rouge and was instrumental in the expansion of the company throughout most of the U.S., enabling him to enjoy his later life sport of golf while playing at most of the top ten courses in the country including Augusta National, Pine Valley and Cypress Point, with fondly detailed memories of each. \r\n\r\nAfter a heart transplant in 1993 he and his wife Tonni revisited the Texas Hill Country he had known from childhood vacations and purchased property in Mountain Home that was his pride and joy as he reassembled neighboring parcels and buildings through 2005 to include 940 acres of the original ranch and raised registered Herefords. An avid reader and early devotee of Kindle Books, one of his last selections would most certainly have been "A Life Well Played".\r\n\r\nSurvived by his wife of 48 years Tonni Collette Burns; brothers, Charles Wilson Burns, Jr. and Jacob Traber Burns III, and sister Nancy Cecilia Burns. Preceded in death by his parents, Charles Wilson Burns and Elsie Molaison Burns. \r\n\r\nThe family would like to thank all the dedicated medical personnel involved in his care and treatment in his final days, and in lieu of flowers requests a donation in his name to the charity of your choice.\r\n\r\nPrivate Family services will be held. \r\n\r\nFuneral arrangements are entrusted to Grimes Funeral Chapels of Kerrville.\r\n\r\n
