Challie Thornton

August 23, 1928 — August 17, 2018

Challie graduated from this life to a much better one in the wee hours of August 17, merely six days prior to her 90th birthday. She was a lady of deep convictions in her spiritual faith, of strong commitment to her family and friends and she will be sorely missed by all.\r\n\r\nChallie was an alumna of Ward Belmont High School and Ward Belmont College in Nashville, Tennessee, and later received her BS degree from The University of Iowa. She then went on to receive a Master's Degree from the University of Texas, Austin in Physical Education. Her teaching career started in Corpus Christi and concluded as an original staff member at Robert E. Lee High School in San Antonio, Texas, where she worked alongside her dear lifelong friend Ruth Tatum. She enjoyed serving as the Head of Waterfront Activities at Camp Waldemar, Hunt, Texas, for many years and always stayed tuned in to the San Antonio Spurs and her beloved Lady Longhorn basketball teams.\r\n\r\nIn her later years, Challie was a member of Trinity Baptist, Kerrville and previously was a member of the Medina United Methodist, Medina and of Manor Baptist, San Antonio.\r\n\r\nChallie made a positive imprint on all of those she encountered. She was quiet, yet strong, cheerful and fun loving. She is predeceased by her parents, Robert and Adelaide Thornton, and her sister Adelaide Karger Keith. She is survived by her brother Johnny Thornton and his wife Kay of Boerne, Texas; brother-in-law Ken Karger of New Braunfels, Texas; nieces Kathy Fischer and Sherry Flume of New Braunfels, Kara Gooding of Monument, Colorado and Claire Kreifels of Boerne, Texas; nephews David Karger of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, Craig Thornton of Waco, Texas, Robert Thornton of Boerne, Texas, and Andy Thornton of San Antonio, Texas. She loved them all and was greatly loved in return. \r\n\r\nMemorial service will be held at Grimes Funeral Chapels on Thursday, August 23rd at 11:00AM.\r\n\r\n
