Bud Porter, 81, of Kerrville, Texas passed away peacefully in his home on October 31, 2014 after a long battle with cancer. Bud was born in Columbus, Ohio on December, 19th 1932 to Marcella and Harry Porter. He attended Mt. Sterling High School where he lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. Out of high school, he was drafted by the St. Louis Browns (Cardinals). Instead, he decided to accept a football scholarship from Kent State University.\r\n \r\nAt Kent State, he played center and linebacker on the football team, and met the love of his life, Mona Lou Rickard. While at Kent State, Bud was drafted into the United States Army where he served honorably for two years before receiving an honorable discharge. Prior to Bud entering the service, Bud and Mona married, and they were happily married for 58 years until her death in 2012. \r\n \r\nBud began his career at the Aluminum Corporation of America (Alcoa) as a computer programmer. He subsequently was VP of operations for Cleveland Steel Container, and then a home builder.\r\n \r\nBesides his family, golf was a lifelong passion that gave him the opportunity to travel and to share that passion with his sons and grandsons. Bud met his best friends and enjoyed the times he had with them on the course. \r\n \r\nBud is survived by his brother, Dean Porter and his wife Joyce of Mt. Sterling, Ohio, his children Dr. Thomas Porter and wife Lynn of Chapel Hill N.C., Scott Porter and his wife Helen of Kerrville, Texas and Linda Ruscher and her husband Mike of Cincinnati, Ohio. Bud is also survived by his grandchildren Cody Porter of Chapel Hill, NC, Bud Porter of Denton, TX, SSgt. Ross Porter and his wife Sarah of Holliman AFB, NM, Jackson Porter of Austin, TX, Chris Waite and his wife Tammi of Harrison, OH, Kevin Waite of Cincinnati, Ohio, and several great grandchildren. Bud was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Janet and his wife. \r\n\r\nMemorial services will be held at Grimes Funeral Chapels at 10:00 am on Wednesday, November 5, 2014. Bud requested golf attire at the memorial service. \r\n \r\nMemorial donations may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society. \r\n \r\nThe family would like to thank the staff at Dr. Deleon's practice and Ave Maria Hospice for the wonderful care that Bud received during his battle.\r\n \r\n[contact-form-7 id="73" title="Send Condolences"]
