Bill W. Scantlin, 89, of Kerrville, Longview and Holly Lake, Texas, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014. \r\n\r\nVisitation for family and friends will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014, at Grimes Funeral Chapel.\r\n\r\nA graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 27, 2014, at the Holly Tree Cemetery, Holly Lake Ranch, Texas.\r\n\r\nBill was born on June 13, 1925 in Dallas, Texas, to Ruth Josephine Scantlin and James Hubert. He grew up in Jefferson, Texas, and graduated from Jefferson High School. A World War II veteran, he served in the Navy in the Pacific Theater. He attended the University of Texas and Sam Houston State University and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in music and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in commercial art. He married Beatrice Ruth Stewart in April of 1954, and they raised four daughters in Longview, Texas. He was a lifelong educator who touched the lives of many students with his warm spirit and genuine compassion.\r\n\r\nBill had a passion for music and dancing and was known to play clarinet in an East Texas honky tonk as early as age 12. After the war, he played reeds for the big band circuit throughout East Texas. He was admired by all for his quick wit, soulful wisdom and clever sense of humor.\r\n\r\nBill was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Ruth Scantlin; his parents; and his two brothers, Pat Hubert Scantlin and Jimmie Ted Scantlin.\r\n\r\nHe is survived by his four daughters and sons-in-law, Melody and Fred Zuker of Dallas, Texas, Sallie and Mark Armstrong of Kerrville, Texas, Julie and Phillip Conrads of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, and Tracy and Vernon Autrey of Houston, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandsons, five great-granddaughters; numerous nieces and nephew; and many beloved students.\r\n\r\n[contact-form-7 id="73" title="Send Condolences"]
