Bernard W. "Bernie" Bruns, age 87 of Kerrville, passed away on Monday, September 10, 2018 at his home in Kerrville, Texas. Bernie was born on December 25, 1930 in Goliad County to Christian and Ellen Bruns. He came to Kerrville with his parents in 1946 and graduated from Tivy High School in 1948. He attended John Tarleton College and graduated from Texas A&M College in 1953.\r\n \r\nHe married Delores "Dodie" Sommers on September 2, 1950.\r\n \r\nUpon gradation from Texas A&M, he went on active duty in the U.S. Army and served until August 1975. His career was in the Corp of Engineer and Army Aviation. He had overseas tours in Thailand, Germany, West Pakistan, Vietnam and England. He had a wide range of assignments and jobs and retired as a colonel while working in International R & D. He was a licensed Professional Engineer and Sanitarian. \r\n \r\nUpon retirement from the Army, he returned to Kerrville and became the General Manager of the Upper Guadalupe River Authority and managed getting the City of Kerrville on surface drinking water with the construction of a dam, reservoir in the Guadalupe River and local area water treatment facilities. He retired from the Authority in 1994 and became the Executive Director of Kerrville's Dietert Senior Center for 5 years.\r\n \r\nFor the next 9 years, he was involved in marketing homes in Kerrville area Retirement Communities - thereafter enjoyed a retired life until his death.\r\n \r\nBernard was preceded in death by his wife, Dodie.\r\n \r\nHe is survived by his younger sister, Deniece Helmlinger; his daughter, Janis Gaul, son-in-law, Joseph and granddaughter, Jessica; daughter, Leslie Partonen, son-in-law, Michael, grandchildren, Heather, Carol and Nicholas; as well as great-granddaughter, Breeanna.\r\n \r\nMemorial services will be held at 10 AM, Friday, September 14, 2018 at Zion Lutheran Church officiated by Pastor Mike Williams.\r\n \r\nIn lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund at Zion Lutheran Church, 624 Barnett Street, Kerrville, Texas 78028 or other charities of choice.\r\n
