Benno Johnnie Bauer, Sr., 98, passed away May 7, 2019. Private graveside services will be held Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Kerrville.\r\n\r\nBenno Bauer was born August 13, 1920 in Albert, TX, the son of Paul August and Ida Ruby Vollmar Bauer. Benno married Ruby Julia Schaper on July 12, 1942 at the Government Hill Methodist Church at Dodd Field in San Antonio, TX. They were married almost 71 years.\r\n\r\nBenno, at the age of 17, joined the Civil Conservation Corps (CCC) and was sent to Duncan, AZ and later to Rodeo, NM, until he was discharged April 1940. August 9, 1940, he volunteered in the U.S. Army and served until September 28, 1945 being honorably discharged as Sergeant. Benno, along with two of his brothers, Lee and Roland Bauer, served in the Army during World War II.\r\n\r\nAfter years of service, Benno retired from the V.A. Hospital, Kerrville, TX. He was a hard worker, always adding on to our home or working on the yard at Lytle Street as well as building our home on Willow Way. After retirement, he loved to refinish antique furniture, garden, hunt and fish. Benno shelled hundreds of pounds of pecans from his yard utilizing his pocket knife as he wanted to keep the pecans whole! When you left their house or when they came to visit, you would have plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, as well as home-made cookies or pie. He loved the outdoors and was looking forward to a trip to Ruidoso, NM this fall. \r\n\r\nBenno was preceded in death by his parents; wife; siblings or their spouses, Bob Chappel, husband of Pauline Bauer Chappel, Lee & Nona Bauer, Roland & Rita "Babe" Bauer, Lillian Bauer & Melvin Bull, Ruby Bauer & Milton Dornberg, Edison "Eddie" & Susie Bauer, Harold Bauer, Paul Bauer, Jr. and Dewayne Council, husband of Mary Jane Bauer Council; and a grandchild, Chad Bauer.\r\n\r\nSurvivors include his siblings, Pauline Bauer Chappel, who recenty celebrated her 100th birthday, Rosie Bauer, wife of Harold Bauer, Cather Bauer, wife of Paul Bauer, Jr., and Mary Jane Bauer Council, youngest sibling; his children, Benno J. Bauer, Jr. and wife, Jan of Houston, TX; Bonnie J. and husband, Charles VanBerg, Jr. of Mansfield, TX; Becky J. and husband, Stan Rodarte of Dana Point, CA; and Brian J. Bauer of Kerrville, TX; his grandchildren, Colby and wife, Jenny of Roanoke, TX; Emily Bauer of Houston, TX; Tresta and husband, Aaron L. Bighorse of Norman, OK; Brent VanBerg of Oklahoma City, OK; and Ashley Rodarte of Dana Point, CA; great-grandchildren, Abigail "Abi" Bauer and Blake Bighorse.\r\n\r\nBenno was laid to rest Tuesday, May 14, 2019 in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Kerrville, TX.\r\n
