Barbara Kiefer Schellhase passed away early Saturday morning on February 23, 2019 at her home in Kerrville, Texas. She was born in Kerrville to Albert Kiefer and Merle Smith Kiefer on May 5, 1934. She married her childhood sweetheart, Walter Ray Schellhase of Kerrville on June 27, 1953 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Kerrville.\r\n\r\nBarbara was a 1952 graduate of Tivy High School. She attended SWSTC in San Marcos prior to her marriage. Barbara was a three-year tennis letterman at Tivy and attended the Texas State championship rodeo as a barrel racer for three consecutive years. She loved riding her horse Dolly. She was extremely talented with the arts and participated in numerous HS competitions with Gerald Jones (G- Harvey).\r\n\r\nBarbara was a full time mother and housewife to her two children (Vicki, born September 3, 1954 and Scott, born April 19, 1959) and husband. In addition Barbara was in life, a true "Army wife". She loved the Army and was a true supporter of her husband's nearly 40 years of military service. She received numerous awards for her outstanding support of the Army reserves. Barbara was an active volunteer in the community serving many years with the hospital volunteers. She participated with the Click & Clog dance group that performed on a regular basis to the local civic groups and nursing homes.\r\n\r\nBarbara was a true miracle survivor. With only a 30% chance of survival, she survived brain surgery that not many surgeons would attempt, and in 1992 she survived cancer surgery with no percentage of survival. She has also overcome numerous serious falls that affected her mobility. In 2017 she survived a low percentage second brain surgery that left her paralyzed on the left side, but never reduced her desire to live and travel. She lived the life of a true miracle and praised God for every day He gave her.\r\n\r\nBarbara was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Merle Kiefer; her older sister, Peggy Kiefer; her grandparents, William and Sophia Kiefer and Will and Martha Smith.\r\n\r\nBarbara is survived by her husband, Walter; her daughter, Vicki Schellhase; her son, Scott Schellhase and his wife Lendon Schellhase; her grandchildren, Devan Schellhase Hamby and husband Stephen Hamby, and Kiefer Scott Schellhase.\r\n\r\nVisitation will be 5-7 PM, Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at Grimes Funeral Chapels. Church services will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, February 28, 2019 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church. Graveside services will follow at Garden of Memories. The family wishes to thank Peterson Hospice for the great care provided in her final days.\r\n\r\nChurch services will be conducted by Father Bert Baetz, Father Mike Wheeler and Father Tom Murray. \r\n\r\n
