Barbara Avery

September 12, 1946 — February 11, 2019

Barbara Avery of Kerrville passed away on February 11, 2019, at her home. She was born to John C. and Sidney Helen Holmgreen in Houston on September 12, 1946. Barbara attended Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio and graduated with a bachelor's degree from Southern Methodist University. \r\n \r\nIn November 1968, she married Rocco F. Avery of San Antonio and Muzquiz, Coahuila, Mexico, in a small chapel in San Antonio. They began their married life in a rustic adobe house near the headquarters of Rocco's mother's ranch, La Goriona, near Muzquiz. First came the twins, Pilar and Leticia, next Emiliano Guerrero, "Mito," and last, Blanca. \r\n \r\nThe Averys moved from the ranch to another charming home at the Black Sun Herb Farm in Helotes. Located on the bank of a winding stream and blessed with period buildings and a large plot of land, The Black Sun drew customers from San Antonio to sample its various herbs and food. \r\n \r\nAlong the way, Pilar, Leticia, and Blanca graduated from Texas colleges. Blanca went on to a master's in international business from the University of Manchester, England. Mito served four proud tours of action in Iraq.\r\n \r\nBarbara was a mother and wife for many years. As her children spread out, she came to the Hill Country nearly twenty years ago and took up residence in Kerrville. In her later years, she joined the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, through which she guided others in their spiritual search. She found a channel for her strong faith in her devotion to the ministry of Trinity Baptist Church of Kerrville.\r\n \r\nBarbara is survived by two of her daughters, Leticia Mounir (Albuquerque) and Blanca Avery (Houston); two granddaughters, Carmen and Franziska Avery (Kansas); her sister, Lida Smith (San Antonio); her brother, John Holmgreen (Corpus Christi); her nephew, Kevin Avery (Rio Grande Valley); her sisters-in-law, Evita Avery (San Miguel de Allende, Mexico), and Kathleen Avery (Corpus Christi); and numerous family and friends.\r\n \r\nBarbara's funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, February 21, 2019 at Trinity Baptist Church of Kerrville, 800 Jackson Road, reception to follow.\r\n \r\nThe family asks that gifts in her memory be made to Trinity Baptist Church in lieu of flowers.\r\n
